A Quotient Survey Among Non-savings Group Members In Malawi

HOPE International is a Christ-centred microenterprise development organization whose mission is to invest in the dreams of families in the world’s underserved communities as they live and proclaim the Gospel. This is accomplished through providing biblically based training, savings services, and microfinance loans that aim to restore dignity and break the cycle of poverty. HOPE International’s network spans 18 countries across Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America. HOPE International serves people from all faiths. One of the main models through which HOPE International operates is through saving groups. HOPE International had conducted a Quotient Survey among a sample of their savings groups members to better understand the impact of the savings group ministry. However, they felt that just gathering data from group members may not give a full picture of the impact of their project. Hope International wanted to get further insights into the impact of their savings ministry by gathering data using the same Quotient Survey from community members in their ministries who are not part of the savings group ministry to better understand the impact of the savings group ministry. PALM Consulting Limited was hired to conduct this Quotient Survey on behalf of HOPE International.

PALM Consulting Limited drafted a comprehensive proposal which was submitted to National Committee for Research in the Social Sciences and Humanities for ethical approval, trained research assistants who were responsible for data collected over a period of just over 2 weeks in 15 districts namely Balaka, Blantyre, Chikwawa, Machinga, Mangochi and Mulanje in Southern Malawi; Dedza, Dowa, Lilongwe, Mchinji, Ntcheu and Salima in Central Malawi; and then Chitipa, Mzimba and Rumphi in the northern region. The choice of these districts and sample distribution was matched with the treatment group sample that was drawn at baseline. As per HOPE International guidance the survey was conducted among 321 community members in these districts.

Sample size: 321 households
